![]() Released in 2020, Dreams is Media Molecule's spiritual successor to LittleBigPlanet, with it being less of a game and more of a set of creation tools built around a diverse engine that give players virtually unlimited creative freedom. In retrospect, it's likely that LittleBigPlanet moved away from its focus on creation because the original developers had bigger ideas that couldn't be accomplished within what was ultimately a platformer. It's clear that Sumo, along with Media Molecule and Sony, had a ton of love for the series, given how much support each entry saw past its release. Still, Sumo Digital isn't to blame for the death of the LittleBigPlanet series. ![]() While Little Big Planet 3 was certainly more of what made the series great, it lost the simplicity that gave previous titles their charms. Some felt the game had an overwhelming number of features. Additionally, the amount of new content began to cause more bugs while also straining new players. ![]() While this game was well-received and praised for further advancing the game's creation tools, LBP3 was the first game in the series to release on multiple systems: the PS3 and PS4.Įach version of the game contained serious, game-breaking bugs that ultimately hurt sales. Soon after LBP2 was released, Media Molecule chose to move away from the series to pursue other projects. Sumo Digital took over with Little Big Planet 3. Bullet-hells, kart racers and even fighting games were all made in what was essentially a platformer engine. This scripting system meant that players could accurately recreate games like the original Legend of Zeldaand even make their own original games. The scripting system involved players using new logic-based switches that could interact with a wide range of items in the game, altering certain properties with an entirely new selection of conditions. However, nothing would completely change the series' level creation mechanics like LBP2's scripting system. With additions like NPCs and new equipment for players to use, creators had way more to work with when it came to making new levels. LittleBigPlanet 2, also developed by Media Molecule, is regarded as a fantastic sequel that built upon everything that made the original so charming.
